The unique trucks of New York
After returning from Japan obsessed with their tiny trucks, I started to notice that New York has its own unique variety of trucks and service vehicles. Many have hand-painted signage and funny logos. Some are truly specialized. I’ve attached several photos below, mostly taken in our neighborhood.

Visiting the USS Growler nuclear attack submarine
Earlier this Fall, Paola and I took advantage of the summer Friday night free admission to the Intrepid Air and Space Museum to visit, among other things, a Cold War-era nuclear-armed submarine, the USS Growler. During the late 1950s they were the front line nuclear deterrent and expected to be one of the sacrificial first…

Jazz for a Monday morning chill
I put on McCoy Tyner’s Nights of Ballads and Blues while walking to work today because it was sitting in my Apple Music albums and I hasn’t listened to it before. It really fit the Monday morning vibe. Enjoy.

Where to recycle anything in New York City
Keeping our tiny apartment in Manhattan tidy requires constant attention to not accumulating things. Part of what we’ve developed over the years is a strategy for getting rid of things we no longer need or want. Light and shadow
No need to wait for the golden hour as the sun is setting, New York is good for photos at any hour. The skyscrapers cast hard shadows like sundials onto the streets below. All photos were taken and edited on my iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Finding weird and wonderful album covers
Since I just repaired our turntable I’ve been going to record stores to expand our collection. So far Princeton Record Exchange (PRX) in Princeton, NJ and Generation Records here in New York have been my favorites. PRX is well worth the trip if you’re starting a collection because they have so many classics for under…

Biking in New York is better since CitiBike
For the last few years, Paola and I have been proud annual members of CitiBike, New York’s bike share program. It’s completely transformed the way we get around the city. It’s the quickest way to get crosstown, period, and it’s less per month than the cost of a single tax ($169/year or $14/mo+tax, as of…

Transcending time in a New York cab
It’s 4:20 in the morning and I can see the stars. This is a bit glamorous, I think as I flag down a taxi on a nearly deserted Third Avenue below our apartment. I have had plenty of early morning flights, but this will be my first pre-dawn departure since moving to Manhattan over three…

Quick escapes from New York City by bus
There’s nothing quite like stepping off the bus onto the street of a new city on a Friday night to face its new sights, sounds, and smells. We like to get out of New York for the weekend from time to time, and the cheaper and quicker we can do it, the more time and money we…
